Weekly Prompts Wednesday Challenge – Christmas Bling.

“A lovely thing about Christmas is that it’s compulsory, like a thunderstorm, and we all go through it together.” – Garrison Keillor

This week’s Wednesday challenge here on partner Susan and my site is CHRISTMAS BLING.

The term “bling” was originally used in modern terms by Dana Dane in the rap song “Nightmare” in 1987. At the time, “bling” was simply an ideophone mimicking the sound of a bell, particularly as cartoons at the times relied on the sound of bells to depict light hitting gems, jewelry, and money on-screen.

As a noun the word “bling” refers to expensive, ostentatious clothing and jewelry, or the wearing of them. My meaning of the word refers to the colorful lights, gift wrapping and cheerful attitudes expressed at this time of the year. The optimism  and hope of good cheer is contagious.

For me the magic of the bling effect is Candy Cane Lane in Edmonton (Canada) which is over 50 years old. The Festival of Light season started on December 9th and continues until New Year’s day.

This year sleigh rides will be available for those motorists who wish to park their vehicles and enjoy a slow-paced ride through the area.

Candy Cane Lane will be hosting three walk nights. On December 10, 17, and 23, Candy Cane Lane will be closed to vehicles from 5pm until 11pm. Take a little longer, sledge, ski and walk through the lane!

As always visitors are encouraged to bring donations for the Food Bank. Green donation bins will be set up along the lane to drop off Food Bank items.

This is how we add a touch of winter bling to my city.

What do you do to add a touch of magic to the season?

As always, our challenge is flexible, please interpret it in any way you wish – Words, Pictures, Poetry or Rhyme.
