“There is no sincerer love than the love of food.” — George Bernard Shaw.
This week the Wednesday challenge here on partner Susan and my site is QUIRKY FOODS.
Something is “quirky” when it is characterized by exhibiting peculiar or unexpected traits. The adjective is often used to describe people, but food can also exhibit traits or peculiarities that people are not aware of them having.
The more innocuous members of this group include artichokes ( a chore to peel), lemons, garlic( lingering aroma), anchovies and grapefruit.
The following items include chili peppers (using them requires care and caution), fiddleheads and the Japanese blowfish require extra caution when being prepared. It is highly recommended to wear gloves when working with chili peppers and not touch any areas on your face.
Blowfish, known in Japan as fugu, is a highly prized delicacy both as sashimi or as an ingredient in soup, but the fish’s liver, ovaries and skin contain the poison tetrodotoxin and the parts must be removed by specially trained and licensed preparers. There is no known antidote to the poison.
Recently a friend and I prepared a food dish that required using chili peppers and the removal of the seeds. Care and caution were not used and my friend inadvertently rubbed her face and suffered a stinging, burning and lingering pain as part of the pepper’s quirky nature. A mixture of baking soda and water applied to the areas helped to relieve the burning effects.
This week we ask you to tell us of those foods that you consider to have eccentric behavior. If you have had any negative experiences using quirky foods tell us.
As always, our challenge is flexible, please interpret it in any way you wish – Words, Pictures, Poetry or Rhyme.
