Weekly Prompts Wednesday Challenge – Receptionists

“Most people who work at home find they do not have the benefit of receptionists who serve as personal guards.”—Judith Martin

This week the Wednesday Challenge from partner Susan and myself is RECEPTIONISTS.

Many office receptionists (especially those who work in busy medical centers) are worth their weight in gold and provide an image of an informed professional who is competent, understanding and knowledgeable. An asset to their employer.

Others are the less competent, poorly trained and inexperienced employees who are unsure of their role in the office pecking order and instil a feeling of doubt in patients trying to communicate with their physician.

My friend recently spoke with one such employee.

She wanted to arrange a telephone consultation with her physician. She contacted the office on a Thursday afternoon and attempted to arrange such a meeting with him for the following Saturday.

The person she spoke with assured her such an arrangement could be made and a time quoted for after three p.m. It was a pleasant call and the receptionist appeared to be helpful.

Saturday afternoon the awaited call from the doctor did not take place. She contacted the office and was told that the doctor was not apprised of the pending conversation.

The person she spoke with this time ( another receptionist) told her she needed to schedule an appointment with the doctor to have such a chat. The next available slot would be the following Wednesday. The female on the other end of the line apologized for the misunderstanding.

I realize that many such medical personnel are attempting to serve a demanding patient spate of calls but some degree of care should be given to ensure patient care and safety.

This week we welcome you to write about your own experiences with office receptionists in any formal setting. Be either pro or con. Share your concerns or comments with us.

As always, our challenge is flexible – please interpret in a way that suits you – using Words, Pictures, Poetry or Rhyme.
