“Objectives can be compared to a compass bearing by which a ship navigates. A compass bearing is firm, but in actual navigation, a ship may veer off course for many miles.” ~ Peter Drucker.
This is another follow up to my previous articles regarding the new WordPress navigation system that has been implemented on some of our sites. This is Not a Challenge and comments are enabled.
As many of you are aware, last weekend I noticed changes to the navigation system on the WordPress sidebar, this meant I was unable to access the WP Admin Classic Editor.
I figured out a way to access the Admin classic editor and soon afterwards I was contacted by other bloggers who were also affected.
I vaguely remember seeing a WordPress notice about a newly improved navigation sidebar, I also have a vague recollection of ignoring it!
I’m afraid the IT teacher in me just won’t lie down, which is why we created the support section ‘How-To’ here on Weekly Prompts.
So, to make sure our How-To pages were up-to-date I contacted WordPress to ask about the changes.
I was told that all WordPress sites would eventually change to the new navigation system, irrespective of whether the site is free or fee-paying and/or which device is used.
The change is to our accounts, so if like me, your account runs more than one site, your sites will change at the same time.
The rollout will be slow, just a few sites at a time so that any unexpected issues can be fixed. In other words, some of us are guineapigs!
If your account has already been switched to the new navigation system, you have the option of returning to the old navigation sidebar, and you’ll have the usual access to the WP Admin Classic Editor shown below.
Talking of the Classic, I received one or two queries about the classic, so to set the record straight. The WP Admin Classic Editor is the editor that has always been available via the WP Admin area, it is not the one below that was removed last summer. It is, however, more flexible than the one used by the Blocks.
If the WP Admin link is still present in the sidebar of the admin area, then your account has not yet been switched, and your navigation sidebar is still the old one. For now, you need not to do anything but wait!
To make future access easier, the instructions for reverting to the removed navigation sidebar are now included in our How-To section and are downloadable and Printable. Follow the link below.

Haha, thank you Peter. More like Lazy Susan! I’d nodded off over the Reader when your notification woke me up!
I’ve been looking at the download stats of the How To files. Since Saturday we’ve had 309 downloads. Mostly the Microsoft blogging Template. But so far this morning we’ve had 54 downloads of the instructions to revert to the usual navigation bar! 🙂

Sue this was very helpful for me, as when my site changed this morning I was ready to quit WordPress and now I have it back to normal. Thanks so much for all of your help.

Hi there! Jim sent me here. I woke to find my WP navigation, sidebar, whatever it’s called was changed overnight (Aus time) and wrote a post whingeing about it. I’ve followed your directions, but still can’t change back. When I go to my account setting page https://wordpress.com/mywhateveritscalledpage/account a message appears that states the page can no longer be found. I can’t find any interface or dashboard appearance tabs 😦

I still have WP Admin so I guess that mine has not changed yet. I’m in Australia too so maybe I will be WP’s next victim. I haven’t seen what the new sidebar looks like but I’m glad to have the option to revert back. However, as we know WP eventually removes the old features forever so I may have to persevere and learn how to use the new version.

Ah, found a way to work it out. When I clicked Get More Help, I was taken to my old navigation sidebar. Weird, but I was able to make the changes. Thanks for posting this, Sue!

Thanks for the fixes Sue . I went and downloaded the “How To” instructions and saved the links even though my blog had not changed. However, by the time I had done that and written an RDP post the change had hit me. Your fix came not a moment too soon.

I’ve just followed your instructions and am back in Classic. I had to click on something else to get to the ‘dashboard appearance’ toggle, then save the interface setting, but oh, the relief!! Thank you!

It’s beginning to look as though the pathway may be slightly different on some sites. Thank you for this.
