Word Prompt Character

“Character is like a tree and reputation like a shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.” — Abraham Lincoln

This week’s Word Prompt on Susan and my site Weekly Prompts is CHARACTER.

Character is at times amorphous (without a clearly defined shape or form). When we are born it is a blank sheet waiting for input to help us define ourselves. This input is essential to our forming thoughts, opinions, beliefs and values.

Puppies, hamsters, kittens and other entities also have character. Puppies are playful and cuddly and cute. Hamsters are curious and get physical at night (they love running on their wheels and nibbling their food and candied treats). Kittens are curious and at times wonderful companions.

These creatures are also innocent and their basic traits do not vary that much over time. Human beings on the other hand are more malleable and need information and input to  function in society .

In a recent post on my site The Main Aisle, I wrote about children using credit cards (“Kredit kards for kids a krazy koncept?“). One parent gave a credit card to an eight year old little girl who lost it while visiting family. There was no name on the card but an expiration date and security code were visible.

I am sure that the parent involved believes that they are helping their child develop worthwhile, wholesome notions regarding money and restraint. But an eight year old granted access to such unlimited financial favor is absurd.

For this word challenge my partner Susan and myself invite you to tell us your views on character. Some see character as an admirable trait (“it takes a lot of character to do what he just did” ) or else another type of personality(“Yeah, that guy is a real character.”)

This challenge is not limited to verbal descriptions or even human beings for that matter. Character is a subjective term and also applies to the animal world. If you wish, give us photos of your pet showing its spunk and character.
