Word Prompt Hex Key

“Look at this. A bar stool named Sven? Some old Swedish custom, the winter kicks in, weather gets harsh, after a while you find yourself relating to the furniture in ways you didn’t expect? ” Thomas Pynchon

This week’s Word Prompt on my partner Susan and my site is HEX KEY.

Before you get yourself all twisted in a knot over witchcraft and spells let me assure you that this Hex Key has absolutely nothing to do with the occult or even astral projection.

A Hex key, Allen wrench or Allen key, is a simple tool used to drive bolts and screws with hexagonal sockets in their heads. It is a handy tool that magically enables its user to tighten elusive bolts and screws in those hard to get at spots on furniture that you assemble at home.

Ikea Furniture is the internationally renown distributor whose name is closely associated with the key since many of the pieces of furniture it sells relies heavily on the key to get assembled.

My first experience with this key was over twenty years ago when I purchased my first functional computer desk from one of their regional outlets.

While assembling the item was at times nerve wracking ( I do not read Japanese or Norwegian) I can attest to the fact that the desk is still as good today as it was when I initially assembled it.

Nowadays it seems this innovative way of involving customers into assembling their furniture is being copied on a large scale. Many furniture stores however fall dismally short of the Ikea philosophy of selling durable furniture at reasonable prices.

Furniture department stores tend to pimp out furniture suites and dining sets that are poorly constructed and not worth the money the consumer has to pay for them.I recently bought such a shabbily constructed dinette set and will reveal all in an article I will post on my other site.

For this week’s challenge Susan and I would like you to tell us your views of the assemble-it-yourself furniture approach. Have you had any bad experiences with the Ikea brand of furniture or know someone who has. Let us know your take on this topic. We are all ears.
